The Piazza della Repubblica, or Republic Square, has a long history that includes being a Roman forum, the commercial center of the city, a ghetto where minorities were segregated, a massive urbanization project that demolished medieval landmarks when Florence was the capital of Italy, and now the home of high-end hotels, stores and popular cafes. Was built in 1895. Its inscription reads: “The ancient center of the city restored from age-old squalor to new life.”
